I have a special student tomorrow

Tomorrow I have a challenge. A woman that is near and dear to me has decided to obtain a Concealed Carry Handgun Permit. Although she comes from a long line of shooters, people that ran the guns back in the day were exclusively male. She is approaching 70 years of age. That is a generational thing. She has to my knowledge never shot a firearm although she could have reached one any time in the house she grew up in.

Recent events where she normally shops has led her to this. An abduction in mid-afternoon in a parking lot.

Tomorrow, I will give the class one on one and here is what we start with:

A Smith and Wesson model 34-1 Kit revolver in .22LR. My favorite for new shooters. We will go from there. My State does not have any requirements on what you shoot to qualify with. We will start here.

On the plus side I know I will get fed well tomorrow!

Wish us both luck tomorrow. I have a passion for empowering people. Especially this person.

  1. Wishing you luck...

The oldest student I've ever taught was the 78 year-old mother of a friend of ours... I started here with my daughter's Ruger Stainless Steel Bearcat in .22...

She completed the NRA Basic Pistol/Ohio CCW course without a problem, even with her arthritis, using a tip-up barrel .380 Beretta...

    1. Oh, the Bobcat or a variant? Good gun. Thanks Dann. I appreciate the wish.

    2. @Keads... I believe it was a Beretta Cheetah with the tilt up barrel... first I had seen one... I fired it during class and while I don't know if it had been worked on... the long stroke of the trigger was very smooth and light...

Her son had bought it for her and her weaker hands...

I hope all goes well tomorrow...

    3. Bobcat is a fun little gun, but is .22 or .25. It has a long pull that isn't as bad as an LCP, but still isn't smooth.

If the Cheetah can be worked to have a smooth pull, that would be a nice mouse gun.

  2. Best of luck in the training. I hope she feeds you well; you could use it.

My grandma had a shotgun and knew how to use it. When she moved into town, the neighbors weren't the best so it gave her some peace of mind knowing it was there. She hid it in her closet where she could reach it fairly quickly, but it still took relatives a couple days to find it when they were clearing out the house after she died. She was really good at hiding things-sometimes almost in plain sight. She usually had family with her on shopping trips, because she didn't drive; so there was never really a safety issue when shopping.

    1. Mrs. S.- I have known many as you describe, I would have not wanted to tangle with either one of my Grandmothers!

So, I'm underfed? Hey I weigh 165 with the Colt Commander on my hip, LOL!

  3. With your talent, I doubt if wishing for good luck is required!
    Have fun!

  4. Great choice on the starter gun. Good luck with that and I don't think I have to say have fun. That will be a given.

  5. That is so cool! Not that she feels she needs it, but that she is saying "I will not be a victim."
