Don't Judge

If you are driving around and see another car that is out there and looks like crap? Don't judge. Award winning Mustangs are here now but not so much back in the day. The 1971? Mechanical restoration completed in 1982. Cosmetic restoration not until 1989. The 1966? Bit shorter, but still five years. Both took thousands of dollars too and a lot of effort. I lost my best helper along the way to boot.

This 1964.5 Mustang to most would look like crap. I know better. It is running again. Soon.

It's Good. Very Good!

So although I have an original plate for the 1964.5 Mustang under glass I decided to order one. From here.

They did not disappoint!

If that video was too boring, try this one.

Good looking plate for sure!

Ha! Speed Dating FoMoCo Style

From a friend on the book of face comes this video. Well played FoMoCo! "I play base guitar, I'm a ninja." Ha! She is a stunt driver. I'm not smoking the Pirelli P Zeros for anybody. Well for her I would. I think she could teach me things =) She is always watching where the car is going to go yet banters with the guys.

Family Reunion. It sorta works like this

More later, but I don't know when. Gotta get ready for CMP Gun Skool this week.

And yes, this is the soundtrack for that. I would go there in a heartbeat if I could.

Oh, for all the Canon camera haters, the only cousin that actually makes a living shooting photos had a Canon around his neck today =)

More later!

Happy Birthday Francis!

Why yes I name my cars. 20 years ago today I bought this car:

After all of the miles and all of the things, it still has had only TWO Recalls for stupid stuff. I have to admit though that running up to Lagniappe's Lair for a Blog shoot was the swan song for this girl on the open road. She still serves as my daily driver though.

When you get to this point after 3 clutches, 2 radiators, A/C compressor, left side window motor, 4 audio head units, blower motor, and a distributor (that was weird I suspected the EEC-IV module instead of the bearings on that), and being totaled, well, I don't like walking in the middle of banjo country if the need arises.

I bought her a birthday gift as the MOMO shifter had finally disintegrated that was installed the week after purchase.

It is a Ford Motorsport shifter and promises another 5 horsepower =)

I also think I have one of the last printed shop manuals from FoMoCo for this ride. I'm not getting rid of this faithful friend, just waiting on the aftermarket people to start making interior trim for it!

Oh, and there is this:

This is a wireless adapter for the new camera that allows you to see what it sees and run it from your smartphone. More later!

Hey What's in the Water in WV?

Hey Holiday Inn Express in Ranson WV, what the frack are you irrigating the grass with? After returning home well uh, this:

Yeah, water spots. Sheesh! I did not want to get the clay out or the DA buffer with more aggressive stuff so I'm trying this stuff out first.

Even if it works, I have to re polish.

Next time I might stay with Murphy and his human! More on the Blog shoot later, I have this to do and some video and pics to edit for that. Short version? Even with the drive and this it was WELL worth it!

Badges, we don't need no stinking badges!

Well it beats going back to get a S*it load of dimes!

I have watched the evolution of badges and such on the almost 50 year run of the Mustang. It has been interesting to watch this evolution. First a fender emblem from a 1964 (and a half).

It sports the correct "C4XX" part number. It belongs to a ride I need to get to soon. Guess what? Clean it up and put new paint on the red white and blue "Tri-Bar" and you will be good to go.

Then to the 1966 Fastback GT.

The emblem denotes GT and the letters were a PIA to get right!

Next the 1971 Fastback.

Decals this time around. Interesting to note if you did not have a Mach 1 you got this script emblem for the fender.

It looks similar to the script in the 1994 GT.

Then we look at the fender of the 1994.

No Tri-Bar but it does say GT.

Then to the "other emblems": FoMoCo capitalized on the long running history and stuck these on cars. Literally.

Ok, the Tri-Bar is back. I will give them that.

Tri-Bar is gone.

A horse shoe! Really?!?!

All of these emblems are plastic.

These are not. Serious business back in the day to let everyone know what was under that hood.

289 V-8 as noted by the "V" under the cubic inch number. By the seventies the "V" disappeared.

Now? Well I'm somewhat underwhelmed with the fender on the 2013 GT.

Yes I know it is a 302. Glad y'all got away from the 4.6 liter modular engine. I'm thinking I need some Tri-Bar Pony happiness up here. Just so I can run sorta old school.

Mystery Tool Revealed. And Sadness....

In my last post I asked about the function of a mystery tool. A first time commenter John got it right. The reason I whipped it out was because the wiper arms on the 1966 Mustang were less than presentable.

No matter what I did, I could not remove the rust. So after removal I awaited the replacements. Then sadness. Here is the sticker for the arm.

Um. yeah "more correct". Sorta like "somewhat pregnant". Best I could get without spending a boat load of money on NOS stuff.

I'm sorry. This is correct.

This is not.

So, I will put the new arm and wiper assemblies on the '66.  I always watched the people at car shows pushing the cars out of trailers and they were perfect. Too perfect. Bless them, but I always enjoyed scraping the bugs off the windshield after driving 100 miles or so to get to the show.

I have become more interested in function rather than "correct" or "pretty" in many areas of my life but it is hard to accept less than perfect in these matters just because it had to be so oh, way back when.

Sigh.....

Weekend! With a Special Event!

Today at work and at home the sound of radial engines in the sky filled the air.  Take a listen. I did not get the aircraft, but this is an unmistakable sound.  I caught it from my front porch.

It is that time of year again for the Warriors and Warbirds show at humble airport. I hope I get a chance to get there.

I have much to do however. First up a long overdue haircut.  Second, a friend called last night from my version of Mordor next county over.  His rental property was broken into this week. Bad part? Rental property is next to his house in the ahem, more upscale area of fair Metropolis. It looks like a trip in to assess and recommend a security system for both properties.  Bad part? The standard "scattered smothered and covered" alarm  from some well known company that will not be named * cough ADT cough* that WAS working AND armed did not go off.

Next?  The trigger spring has been replaced on this little Browning BDA-380.  It needs testing.

Remember this sad Mustang?  I have to take care of all the older sisters now even more so than ever. They cannot get jealous! Carb is ready to go back on (I hope).

Oh, I want to get one of these down range to take some video this weekend too.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and remember to change the batteries in your laser equipped firearms! Just like smoke detectors, they are life saving devices!

RIP Carroll Shelby

You made some great rides and Lee Iacocca notes in his book: "Every time Mr. Ford shook hands with that chicken farmer it cost Ford Motor Company at least a million dollars".
Rest in Peace Sir, your legacy is secure and in many good hands.

Marketing vs Reality

So way back when in 2001 I stumbled across this little commercial:

So what do I do? Stumble off to the Jag store and buy Version 1.0 of one of these. I figured: "hey, FoMoCo owns them now, Lucas is nowhere to be seen and maybe they don't leak anymore". Plus you get cool photos of things that can go horribly wrong like this too!

Its the little things with this machine. I only have 25K on it and from day one the defrost bezels have an annoying propensity to pop out of the dash. There was a recall on that too, but the factory effort was lacking. So today I resorted to this:

Ok, I had a boat load of TSB's and recalls. The Jag store *cough Scott Jaguar *cough* here treated me like a red headed step child. I finally started taking it to Knoxville TN. They at least were nice about me actually pulling up in one of these. They gave me a killer XK as a loaner too!

The A/C is back on line, the annoying low washer fluid message is gone, and now only the dead front channel on the stereo and one dead drivers side seat motor remain. For now! Sigh... Let's try some more marketing:

Ok, I feel better: Unfettered avarice imported from Madison Avenue always works, right?

In the machines defense, it is a blast to drive and does have a very rare (only 7 percent came across the pond) with one of these in it.

It is a nice TV commercial!

Tax Dollars at Work!

Glad to see someone is getting full use of my tax dollars!

EEK! Update

So after some old school troubleshooting we have come to the following conclusion:

Why do I say that? Because it is now relying on the other seven cylinders to move it through life. It no longer produces energy to impart to the crankshaft. It is still there, piston moving up and down, valves opening and closing, but for the remaining 7 productive cylinders it is a waste of energy.

So what happened? Perhaps it is waiting to have its mortgage covered by the other 7 cylinders? Kitchen remodeled? Engine block paid for? Did it believe in hope and change? Perhaps.

This example is just a microcosm of this country right now. We are nearing the point of 50 percent of the population paying taxes meaning that they are productive. The other percentage is like my #6 cylinder. Losing one cylinder here has a profound affect on the effective running of this machine. Just like our country.

WHOOPS! Sorry.... Got carried away here. I do not recommend old school troubleshooting for newer cars. I do not recommend pulling spark plug wires off of a running car unless you have the proper tools or really like electroshock therapy.

Verdict.... Fuel injector is toast. Compression good, plug not fouled meaning a ring problem, injector being told to fire, but no fuel being delivered to the cylinder. First attempt is a can of Techron to clean. I will find out shortly if that works. I think not, but do the simple stuff first. Then we are off to injector land!

Well some days are like this.....

My faithful daily driver car (1994 Mustang) got me home from work and threw up coolant in the driveway. Sigh.... Looks like the water pump! But, the water pump lasted for ten years and the car got me home, so it could have been worse. The car has been through a lot, a Honda committed suicide by blowing a stop sign in front of me and I of course T-boned the little coffee can mufflered thing into the junkyard, and yet my ride is still among the rolling. I guess I shouldn't be too bent!
