Sigh...

Back in the day I had really good eyes. Now they are corrected for distance to drive and the last time I went to the eye doctor he wanted to prescribe bi-focal lenses. Sigh. I refused them and got the glasses for legally operating a motor vehicle only.

As that was some years ago, I now find myself when doing "stuff" needing some magnification and all the light I can gather in the universe

The bench is easy.

Big goosenecked magnifier and attached two tube fluorescent fixture. If I need more I have a three way lamp to the right of this.

On the reloading press I recently installed some clever LED lighting.

This LED kit on the Hornady press (I know, I know, I HAD to be different, right) is the only light in the room with no flash for the picture.  It made a huge difference!

Next up for you? A review of the DeSantis Superfly holster for a S&W Bodyguard with a 5.11 concealment shirt.

  1. Awesome idea... I see some light on my reloading presses in the near future... as far as that bifocal thing... I'm skipping them and ordering longer arms so I can read the small print...

  2. Always nice to have enough light to see what you're doing!

  3. Dude, I've noticed my arms have gotten a lot shorter and everyone is now printing stuff way smaller than they used to. I think it's a conspiracy by the military/optometrist complex.

On the other hand that light on your press is awesome. I need one of those. Bad.

  4. Great idea! I was prescribed bifocals too but didn’t get them. I’m putting if off until my arm is not long enough anymore!

  5. I am a bit jealous. With astigmatism, a giant magnifier by itself would not suffice for me as a correction for near vision.

  6. As long as your eyes can see and your fingers can move, you're in good shape!

  7. I was much like you, although I did get bifocals some 15-20 years ago. Surprisingly, my eyesight has slowly been improving. My eye docs believes it's due to 1) age slowly changing my nearsightedness towards farsightedness, and 2) because I don't use glasses to read. I'm fine for anything within 2' and that's distance has been growing. He says that I'm focusing at longer distances. It used to be that farsightedness was much more common than nearsightedness because folks spent more time outdoors and looking, focusing further.

I can't vouch for that theory but it is an interesting thought.

  8. Aging sucks.
My eye doctor put me in trifocals at one point. I walked through life like a bobble head doll trying to find the sweet spot in my lenses.
The last time I went to get new lenses I told the doc you are going to have to do the best you can with a bifocal prescription cuz I'm not doing the trifocal thing again.
    ridiculous.
