Media reports that hotel rooms are in short supply. I would recommend Rock Hill, SC (oh go to Nichols Store in Rock Hill if you are there, amazing store), Concord, NC, Monroe, NC, or Gastonia, NC. Close enough without the bloat of Charlotte.
