Yeah, I'm Holding it Wrong!

According to really good revolver shooters including Jerry Miculek, I hold a revolver wrong. I will not debate the wisdom behind such shooters that are WAY better than I. 

I will say this though. I have small hands. As long as my thumbs do not get into the area around the trigger on a DA I am fine. I have also been taught to do the same thing every time you pick up a Handgun. Semi-Automatic or Revolver. 

I do not put my left thumb across the backstrap, nor do I hook it over my right thumb. 
 
So I ask you as Mr. Curmudgeon and I shot yesterday the range took a video. I am at his home range and I am not an instructor there. 

I can see my right thumb moving between shots. I am shooting .357 Magnums not .38 SPL. I know I need to work on that, but your opnion would be appreciated and I now know that video can be a great training tool.

Of all the days I thought I could slum around at the range! I'm slowly chipping away at my alloted 15 minutes of fame it seems!

Colt Defender AAR

Well, considering the range was somewhat of a three ring circus today I was glad to get some rounds downrange with the new Colt. 

How did it go? Well with a pistol with a 3" barrel and an Aluminum receiver with the total system weighing 24 ounces or about 1.5 pounds, it was sorta uh, interesting shooting the .45 ACP cartridge. 

The only advice I have is to really figure out where to grab the pistol. It looks and feels like a traditional 1911, but it is not when you pull the trigger. I ended up with this after 50 rounds. 

I will admit I have small hands for a guy, but even with the stock honking huge Houge grips, you need to figure out where your hands go and hang on! The slide stop and safety lever will beat you up if you are used to a full steel Government Model unless you figure the grip out. 

So how did it do?  As expected from the Blue Dome. The trigger is smooth with a glass like break. The Novak sights were great. It has a lowered and flared ejection port and a upswept beavertail grip safety.

It took me some time to figure it out, but I think the Colt and I are getting there. From 7 yards. 

 










You will not win a Camp Perry match with it, but after no failure to feed or fire today I will run another couple hundred rounds through it. I will carry it and trust my life to it. It will be a perfect summer carry item.  I have already contacted T. Michael Hast over at the holster site to make me an OWB and IWB holster. 

And if I get a lane open tomorrow, we will shoot some more! 

Oh, its a Phone Too!

I can't leave well enough alone with the iPhone. I found some apps that might be of interest as well as a little accessory to make range time without a training partner a bit more challenging.

First this app. 



You can change all the settings for different targets and speeds. 

 














I'm not thrilled to give this guy a buck 99 American after his stand on open carry. I need to talk to my developer to see if we can do better. 

The other app is the Surefire shot timer. 

The thing about this timer is that it should be able to calibrate to your shots as opposed to the person next to you on the range. Field testing is warranted! I also hear that if close enough it will detect dry fire. I will let you know. 

This works well.

 











I am all about less stuff in the range bag though!

So how to get the iPhone stuff to where you can hear it on the range? 

I searched and searched for the Peltor connector that allows you to jack into its audio circuit.

 












I gave up. Cables are the last bastion of profit for electronic retailers IMHO. I hate to pay for them. I had no luck with Google Fu, and my favorite goto source for everything like this has a 25 buck minimum order. Sigh.... I got one of these. 

 





















Oh, protip! If you are using electronic muffs stick some desiccant in the muffs.

You come off the range sweating and rip these things off as soon as you can. Instead of throwing them in the range bag, wipe them down and stuff a packet in them. They will last much longer!

Just barely though. Both Basic Pistol and CCH classes were at capacity this weekend.

The infamous Ruger MkIII. I took care of it but now I have a Bersa Thunder .380 on the bench that appears to have a magazine disconnect safety problem. 

Sigh....

Range Report!

So today I take this stuff to the range:

Top to bottom the S&W Model 28-2, The Browning BDA-380 and the S&W M&P. The Highway Patrolman was a big hit! Ran some Speer .38 SPL +P's through it. The Action was "as smooth as a mouse's ear". The Browning is as good shooting as it is looking. 

The Highway Patrolman left its mark on the triangle, the Browning on the #2 target. Both are fun to shoot and created much conversation today at the range. I was asked "How many guns do you have?" I said "right now, three".

I'm so proud!

So my student from last months CCH class has been at the range every weekend since. Last week she showed up with one of these:

Ruger SR9c. She is still carrying the S&W Bodyguard, but has come to the semi auto world.

Today, she is back at the range again with her Stepfather, Mother, and Aunt. Mother and Aunt are observing. She wants to know If I want to shoot the Ruger. I say sure. Then she wants to shoot my M&P. OK!

Icing on the cake is that she has named her weapons and shoots both of them, AND is sporting this Tshirt:

I think my work here is done! I am so proud!

"A Bristol police officer was shot by his girlfriend at an indoor shooting range in Piney Flats on Monday, and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether the shooting was caused by “hot brass” falling down the woman’s shirt."  Story is here.

Ok, now for the rest of the story relayed to me by my operative in Johnson City TN. The news says he was shot by his girlfriend. This came as a surprise to the "girlfriends" husband I am told. I have not verified this yet, but it comes from a reliable source. 

Come on people! Be safe at the range ok? Think of the collateral damage too! 

And people wonder why I don't get involved with customers at the range! Duh! This is as good a reason as it gets!
