ZombieRush brought it. DUH! RTFM! Right there on page 16 it says it will do just this:
WARNING: DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE
WHEN INSERTING A LOADED MAGAZINE INTO THE
PISTOL. EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE COULD CAUSE
THE SLIDE TO MOVE FORWARD, CHAMBERING A ROUND AND
MAKING THE PISTOL READY TO FIRE.
Power is back on! So you decide. S&W M&P Pro Series. 9mm in slide lock. Attempting a reload (with dummy rounds of course!) Here is what we get.

I will have my trusted M1911 as backup. So is it a bug or feature for timed competition?
I'm not familiar with that model but I'm guessing it should do that, is this a new gun? has it always done that?
ReplyDeleteDuke.
That is strange. No ready answer.
ReplyDeleteI have had a Glock do that on irregular occasion if you use enough force. I call it a bug. I don't really want things to happen that I didn't choose to occur.
ReplyDeleteI'll go with "bug" this time. The thing is, it is so ingrained in me now to reach up and rack the slide and would result in the ejection of an unfired round. So in my case, time and ordinance would be wasted.
ReplyDeleteIf every handgun I own auto-dropped the slide on mag insertion, I could live with it. But none do, so I automatically rack the slide.
I have M1911 magazines from Taurus, Kimber and S&W. The Kimber magazine causes the slide to close when I insert it. The others do not. The S&W mag, incidentally, won't feet hollowpoints, but all the others do. I guess what I'm saying is, it's the magazine & not the operator, IMHO.
ReplyDeletei think it's a bug.
ReplyDeletemy Bersa does it, too. too much force = slide stop not really doing what it's supposed to do.
It could be either. Generally I don't like my firearm to do anything I haven't physically directed it to do.
ReplyDeleteBut.
If it's consistent and it's not a design flaw then it can be addressed by training. The problem with that is gun handling consistency with other handguns. It's the main reason I no longer carry 1911 style pistols. I can't remember to take off the safety each and every time I present the handgun. Likewise I can see failing to release the slide on another handgun after extensive shooting of this one under pressure.
I'm confident you're experienced enough for it not to be a problem. I'd be a lot more hesitant about a novice shooter.
Bug... Six is correct, it should ONLY do that when you release the slide stop.
ReplyDeleteMy m&p40c does that if inserted firmly. Page 16 of the manual has a warning about not doing it on accident. All 8 mags do it. 3 10rd 40's, 2 12rd 9mm, 2 15 rd 40 and 1 17 rd 9mm. Yep, got a 9mm barrel too. It does not close with an empty mag.
ReplyDeleteWatch the 2nd episode(?) of Topshot season 3, the M&P 45's they use also do it.
Thanks all! ZombieRush brought it. From page 16 of the manual:
ReplyDelete"WARNING: DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE

This pistol is a "loner". I just now RTFM'ed it.
